Life After Swansea University Graduation:  How university opens a world of possibilities! by Emma Choy

Graduation day!

Hi, I’m Emma Choy, a former international student from Hong Kong. I completed my degree in English Language and TESOL at Swansea University between 2020 to 2022. I chose Swansea University for its excellent reputation in language and education studies, as well as its welcoming and supportive international community.

During my time at Swansea University, I enjoyed the engaging and challenging coursework. For example, I was involved in a group project to create a website that utilized digital games and instructional videos to facilitate the acquisition of English grammar and vocabulary. Also, there were opportunities to participate in various extracurricular activities and events. What I enjoyed most about my degree was the opportunity to explore different areas of language and education, and to apply my learning through teaching practice and research projects. I also completed the embedded Cambridge CELTA course, which I enjoyed immensely. The teachers always gave us useful and practical feedback, and the course taught me valuable skills to become an English tutor. The teaching environment at Swansea University was positive and supportive, with knowledgeable and passionate professors who were always available to offer guidance and feedback.

As a recent graduate, I would like to share some tips for students in their final year. First, make the most of your remaining time at university by taking advantage of all the resources and opportunities available to you. Attend workshops and events, network with professors and professionals in your field, and seek out feedback and advice from your peers and mentors. Second, don’t be afraid to explore different career paths and opportunities, even if they don’t seem directly related to your degree. Your university education has equipped you with valuable transferable skills that can be applied to a wide range of fields and industries.

Currently, I am working as an English tutor in Hong Kong, where I am applying the knowledge and skills I gained at Swansea University. For example, I use corpus methods for linguistic studies and Excel for analysing data to help my students achieve their language learning goals. I am grateful for the education and experiences I gained at Swansea University, and I know that they will continue to benefit me in my future endeavours.

In conclusion, graduating from Swansea University is a significant accomplishment that opens a world of possibilities. Your Swansea University education provides you with valuable skills, knowledge, and experiences that can help you succeed in your future endeavours, whether that be in your career or personal life. I encourage all students to make the most of their time at Swansea University and to embrace the opportunities and challenges that come their way.
